Pugilist Akhil Kumar failed to open up the solid defences Gojan Veaceslav and crashed out in the quarterfinal of 54kg category in Beijing Olympic Games on Monday, dashing India's medal hopes.
Akhil, who was the biggest hope and just one win away from ensuring India's first Olympic medal in boxing, was all out offensive and started landing punches right from the start of the match but all the effort went in vain against the solid defenses of his Moldovan opponent.
The Moldovan boxer steadily kept his guard and earned all his points through wandered counterattacks. The deffensive shell worked well for the bantamweight Moldovan to mark his win over India's Akhil Kumar who defeated the world champion in the previous round.
After the first round both the boxers were tied at 2-2, Veaceslav rushed into a decisive lead of 6-2 by landing all his punches bang on target, while desperate Akhil could only reduce the margin of loss by scoring just another point in the last round but it was too late till then.
Now, with Akhil out of the competition, India's medal hopes rest on Jitender Kumar and Vijender Kumarin flyweight featherweight categories respectively. We wish both of them best of luck for Wednesday and hope they will bring India some pride.
